Barbara Dang

Pianist, performer, and improviser from Lille, Barbara Dang has been a member of the Muzzix collective since 2012. Her work bridges interpretation and improvisation, drawing from minimalist and experimental repertoires, including works by Linda Catlin Smith, Morton Feldman, Barbara Monk Feldman, Michael Pisaro-Liu, Federico Mompou, among others. She develops an expanded approach to the piano through unconventional techniques such as prepared piano and direct interaction with the instrument’s strings. Her practice emphasizes musical action, silence, and environmental sound, favoring perceptual and spatial listening over individual aesthetic expression. Her musical curiosity also leads her to explore other keyboard instruments, from the plucked strings of the harpsichord to the breath-driven sonorities of the organ. She collaborates with numerous performers, composers, and artists including Sophie Agnel, Borja Flames, Aude Romary, Laure Vovard, Jean-Luc Guionnet, Radu Malfatti, Michael Pisaro-Liu, Tom Johnson, theatre director Halory Goerger, video artist Lionel Palun, and harpsichord maker David Boinnard. She takes part in projects ranging from postmodern repertoire with Dedalus Ensemble to Looking for Hart’s Songs by Olivier Mellano, as well as Pianoïse by Emmanuel Lalande. Between 2020 and 2021, she released the recordings Lescence/Gmatique and Ouvre-Glace on Circum-Disc and Tour de Bras, and recorded Tombstones (a song collection by Michael Pisaro-Liu) at GMEA, the French National Center for Musical Creation in Albi. Since 2015, she has also been part of the editorial team of Revue & Corrigée, a journal dedicated to experimental sound practices.
